Balancing the Budget

I agree with (almost) everything Ross Douthat says here. And yes, Ross, I'm in favor of means-testing entitlements. Actually, that's probably why movement Republicans consider his spot as "token conservative" at the Times as a joke. Smart conservatives get frowned upon these days.

This is linked in his article, but I highly recommend trying to balance the budget yourself.

  1. Heh, I managed to get well below the 60% threshold -- down to 50%!

  2. Congress is totally incapable of making tough budget choices. They are interested in only one thing: getting re-elected. Raising taxes and cutting spending won't get them votes from constituents who think we can balance the budget by cutting taxes and "government waste". It's time we started to point the finger of blame at the voters.

  3. Well, that's the point of the deficit commission. But since it seems like the GOP is going to go into it with a hard stance against any new taxes at all, it's not going to accomplish anything. The way for progress to be made (in the age of gutless panderers in congress) is for the Dems to use the GOP as cover for spending cuts and the GOP to use the Dems as cover for tax hikes. Unfortunately, that's probably not going to happen.

  4. As long as the Republicans use every issue to try to weaken Obama in 2012 there will be no deals of any kind.
